Surviving on $12,000 a Year

This woman is doing it. And many of the people who commented on this post have lived on less.

When you’re struggling it often feels like you’re alone in your money problems. While it’s depressing to hear the news, it’s also nice to know there are many other people living in way less than desirable situations.

Thank you for the link, Jen!

Pussy Pop

Have you seen the results a Google image search of my name yields? This is one of them. A pussy pop from New Mexico. Awesome.

(The pussy pop was a gift I sent to Jen, btw. She sniffed it and gave it to her dad. This may be the best post I have ever written.)

I need your femme writing!

I’m still accepting submissions for my next book, Visible: A Femmethology, an anthology of writing on queer femme identity. You can read my call for submissions here.

And for some femme around the Web, check out:

  • Darrah’s words on sluts and virgins in her most recent “Femme in the City” column
  • Ethereal’s interview with Go Rainbow Radio, in which she discusses music, the GLBT community, politics, femme identity and her short story that appeared in my first anthology, Queer ShortsQueer Shorts
  • “Trans, Cyber and Valentine’s Day,”a piece by femme writer who chatted with Allenina, a “former porn star, turned stripper, aspiring actress, and ‘one name’ performance artist,” about some of her online dating experiences:

One year ago, she met Lon on MySpace. After messaging for a while, they decided to rendezvous.”I wanted to meet where it was bright and safe… Also, as a transwoman, there is an insecurity that someone may be repulsed.”

Lon wasn’t. Days after their first date, Allenina invited him to her home. The mutual attraction led to a back massage. “Just to make sure he knew I was trans, I asked him if he had read my profile,” Allenina reveals. [He asked] “Why, is there some thing that I should know?” From the look on his face, Allenina sensed there was a problem and told Lon that perhaps he should leave. He agreed saying he would phone later. She never spoke to him again.

“Sometimes I think people just don’t read cyber profiles. I always put in my profile that I am trans. I do put it at the end, however, as I don’t think that is all I am. I also wonder if my profile on MySpace is too sexy. Maybe people relate transsexual with sex and nothing more,” Allenina says.

(Send 1ofakindfeminatrix at MySpace a friend request so you can read the rest of “Trans, Cyber and Valentine’s Day” at her blog.)

Snickers Commercial “Humor”

“Snickers Commercial Blamed for Death of Four Gay Men” via Netscape’s Gay & Lesbian channel:

NOSHEILA, NEW ZEALAND - Two New Zealand men (Johnson DeLarge and Randy Pecker) admitted to beating four gay men to death with baseball bats after watching the Snickers Commercial that ran during the Super Bowl.
“After watching the American Superbowl and seeing those two menses kissing in that Snickers Commerical, I just had this uncontrollable urged to beat-up and kill some gay guys.” said Johnson DeLarge, one of the New Zealand men arrested for the murder of four gay New Zealand men.
“Yeah, we were only going to beat up and kill one gay guy. But, Snickers Candy Bars gave us so much energy and vitality, we decided to kill FOUR gay guys instead.” said Randy Pecker, the other New Zealand man arrested for the murders.
New Zealand authorities have condemed Americans and American television over the incident. “We just wish you Americans would keep your hate and prejudice filled entertainment products in America instead of exporting that kinda stuff to New Zealand.” said New Zealand’s Prime Ministeress.

Haggard Cured Too Quickly

It looks like even the ex-gays are doubting Haggard’s “return to heterosexuality.”

Religiously motivated men who say they have made the journey from gay to straight say it is a long one.
“I do know that a three-week journey is not something reflected in my own life … It took me three years to change my personal orientation,” said Randy Thomas, executive vice president of Exodus International, which seeks to turn gays onto the “straight path” through Biblical inspiration.
Other religiously motivated activists who have taken the same route agreed it took years.
“I would say that a transition would take five to eight years — I came out of a gay lifestyle and it was a long process,” said Frank Worthen of New Hope Ministries outside San Francisco, which also is devoted to turning gay men straight.
